長期的種族隔離、教育不平等以及高的離譜的犯罪率和監禁率都是加劇這些貧富不均地裏差異的原因。除非這些問題能夠得到解決，否則這些落後地區將會持續下去。其結果不但使這些地區居民的發展機會受到限制，而且也會使美國社會日益分裂。至於與台灣或是中國這些國家比較則是不必要的，各國都會有不同的社會問題。
