鷹到了40歲時，爪子不再鋒利和敏捷，甚至抓不住獵物；喙老化得又彎又長，彎曲得幾乎可以碰觸到自己胸前的羽毛；翅膀因年齡的原因而鈣化，變得十分沉重，厚重的羽毛也使它不再靈活，此時飛翔對於鷹來說變得十分吃力。這時鷹只有兩種選擇，要麼就此等死，要麼經歷一次歷時150天的痛苦蛻變，重新展翅高騰。

根據「野生動物急救站」的回應，臺灣俗稱「老鷹」的猛禽「黑鳶」，平均壽命是 22 歲，其他日行性猛禽的壽命也約是 10 歲到 40 歲，他們在壹週刊的報導中表示：「這是一個非常激勵人心的故事，卻與我們目前所知的生態知識稍有出入。」
