此新聞連結第一段寫道：「希拉蕊表示，『放任中國併吞台灣可換取中國註銷對美1.14兆美金的債權』」，為錯誤描述。

▶ 維基解密曾公開披露希拉蕊一封2011年的電子郵件，信件內容為助理轉傳了一篇紐約時報專文——《挽救經濟，放棄台灣》（PAUL V. KANE：To Save Our Economy, Ditch Taiwan），而希拉蕊回覆：「I saw it and thought it was so clever. Let's discuss.」，並未提及是否同意文中論點、亦未多加評論。維基解密的後續信件中，也未有其他相關討論。

▶ 當時媒體多以此封信件，報導希拉蕊支持「棄台論」，但也有評論認為這是過度解讀。評論表示「it was so clever」在語意及脈絡上，均不能代表「同意」，且當時棄台論多以「戰略」或「國家安全」為理由，此篇文章大概是最早提出用「中國放棄美國國債」為交換條件，在當時是很新鮮的論調。

▶ 2011年，希拉蕊的《美國的太平洋世紀》演說中，提到：「台灣是我們重要的安全和經濟夥伴」。2016年希拉蕊參選美國總統，也堅持歐巴馬時期的「重返亞洲」政策，顯示並未採納「棄台論」。
