杵狀指並不是突然發生的，而是需要長時間演進，至少需要3～6個月，才會造成關節附近結締組織增厚，所以如果民眾發現自己有杵狀指，也代表這個疾病已經存在一段時間，因此杵狀指並不是用來早期發現肺部疾病，但可以幫助醫生臨床診斷。
