現今有學者於國際著名雜誌《細胞》的子刊《Cell Chemical Biology》發表文章宣布冬蟲夏草中不含具抗癌功效的「噴司他丁」（Pentostatin），及由此生物合成產生的蟲草素。研究又指出，蟲草素含量過高時會在真菌中引起細胞毒性，這意味著對於人類來說，不宜攝入過量的蟲草素。
