「小美人魚」的童話讓大家對於海洋中存在「美人魚」充滿嚮往，究竟是否真有人魚存在也無人能證實。但是目前有一些自由潛水的景點有提供人魚裝租借的服務，也很有可能拍攝者剛好遇到穿著人魚裝的自由潛水者，台灣目前也有人開設美人魚體驗課程，讓大家過過成為美人魚的乾癮。另外用大堡礁與人魚作為關鍵字查詢，能查詢到 19 世紀有一艘名為「美人魚」的船在此沈沒。
