據說是一位臺灣女遊客2008年到瀘沽湖旅遊，拍攝了許多風光照片，回去洗出照片後，無意間把一張照片豎著看，發現居然像極了一尊睡佛。於是，她把這張睡佛照片寄回瀘沽湖景區管理局，立即引起了不小的轟動，瀘沽湖驚現睡佛的消息傳遍了全鎮。沒多久有人把圖片放在網上，引來不少遊客爭相一睹睡佛的尊容。
