在1990年代以後，隨著自動感應技術的成熟，電梯的關門鍵漸漸被淘汰，因此實際上按鍵並沒有關門的效果。像這樣沒有實際功能的按鈕叫做「安慰劑按鈕」（Placebo Buttons），醫生給病人吃的就像不含任何藥物成分的安慰劑膠囊一樣，雖然沒有實際上的功效，但有時卻能對人的心理產生奇特的影響。在美國，對於普通人來說，這個「關閉」按鈕是沒有作用的，你按或是不按，電梯門總是會關。但你如果按下了按鈕，過一會兒電梯門關上了，你的大腦中就會充滿成就感，你按下按鈕的行為就被強化了，於是以後進入電梯時，你便會習慣性的按下「關閉」按鈕。
