美軍只有兩艘醫療艦，分別是mercy and comfortable號，這兩艘醫療艦最合適的用途，應該是收原本在醫院內的重症病患，不是收武漢肺炎的的病人，好把手空出來，讓醫院資源收重症病人。醫療艦「安慰號」（USNS Comfort）將前往紐約港，而「仁慈號」（USNS Mercy）將會派駐在西岸。每艘船約有 1,000 床的收治能力，不過滿多診療區域是開放的，因此不適合處理傳染病。因此，這些醫療船將不會用於治療 COVID-19 (武漢肺炎)，而會幫助美國城市消化及創傷、手術與其他急診室的患者，減緩地方醫院對抗病毒的壓力。
