俯臥式通氣（prone ventilation）可用於治療肺炎引起的急性呼吸窘迫症(ARDS)，以改善通氣量及氣體交換，但仍須視患者實際情況而定，例如如果患者有顏面或腹面有開放性傷口、脊椎椎體不穩定、懷孕、骨盆骨折或急性出血等情形則不應使用。
