2016年，美國亞利桑那大學研究人員通過基因檢測了杜加（Dugas）生前的血，並與其他愛滋病患者血樣比較，確定他並「不是」愛滋病的最初傳染源。
他往生後，社會說他是將愛滋病傳入美國的第一人，但後來研究證實這是錯誤的消息，愛滋病更早以前就傳入美國了，並不是同性戀者杜加造成的。
