嘉慶年間，有一舉人張瑛，一生為官三十餘載，他最為重視教育事業，每到午夜交更時分，他都會派兩個差役挑著桐油簍巡城。如果見哪戶人家有人在挑燈夜讀，便去幫他添一勺燈油，並且送上鼓勵，這就是「加油」的由來。而張瑛的兒子就是晚清中興四大名臣之一的張之洞。

假的。1924年《清華學刊》就有本年籃球隊正在『天天加油』。老舍的《四世同堂》里也有「老三，加油！」。可見這個用法在民國的時候才流行。
