嘉慶年間，有一舉人張瑛，一生為官三十餘載，他最為重視教育事業，每到午夜交更時分，他都會派兩個差役挑著桐油簍巡城。如果見哪戶人家有人在挑燈夜讀，便去幫他添一勺燈油，並且送上鼓勵，據說這就是「加油」一詞的由來。而張瑛的第四個兒子就是晚清中興四大名臣之一的張之洞。
