有許多被害人都是經由網友引導，下載來路不明的交友APP，或註冊不知名的交友網站，甚至也有被轉介到假冒大型交友網站，該網站在聊天過程會不斷要求民眾以刷卡、匯款、購買虛擬貨幣等方式升級會員資格、開通聊天功能，最後網站卻無預警關閉。
