在美國多數地區流感「並非」應通報疾病，所以美國CDC無法準確知道疫情人數，而是透過實驗室確認的流感住院率，用數學模型估算。因此，所估計的疫情數是採區間呈現，也會再隨時間、疫情進展變動。
