1998年颶風米奇造成的洪水沖毀了新橋兩側引橋的橋墩和橋面，只留下了主體結構部分的4個橋墩和3段橋面完好無損。但喬盧特卡河改道，完全摧毀了新橋南側的銜接公路。這使得新橋殘餘的主體部分成為陸上橋梁。並聞名遐邇。2003年，新橋重新接入公路網投入使用。
