濕紙巾並非純紙張製造，常見的濕紙巾多為難以分解的不織布材質，所以才會這樣耐用不易爛，不過就會容易對環境造成不良影響。另外為了更方便幼兒部分濕紙巾標榜「可以沖馬桶」或「生物可分解」。其實根據有研究發現，當這些這一些所謂“flushable"的濕紙巾進入污水系統後，並不真正會如衛生紙一樣容易分解；另外濕紙巾的存在會讓還沒經過處理的污水滿溢，導致污水提早流入河流與海洋，而濕紙巾中的塑膠成分，更會對海洋生態和生物造成長期的傷害。
