長期推動可可產業的屏東縣內埔鄉文化促進協會總幹事黃琬倫說，過去許多客家人會種檳榔維生，但政府不鼓勵種檳榔，價格也逐年下跌，許多農民面臨轉型。約6年前屏東有業者販售可可苗，並稱巧克力產品價值高，使得許多農民躍躍欲試，沒想到3年後開始採收才發現可可鮮果價格極低，1公斤僅20元，讓許多農民直呼要把可可砍掉。
