一般民眾不需要，一般民眾只要勤洗手，不要揉眼睛和口鼻，避免細菌跑進去，不用特別戴護目鏡，但如果碰到疑似個案的人就要注意。黃立民醫生指出：「目前新型冠狀病毒主要就是飛沫傳染，肯定可以透過結膜被感染，尤其嘴巴、鼻子、眼睛都有可能會碰觸病毒。不過一般感染科醫生都會有這樣認知，在進行高危險行為時一定要配戴護目鏡。」
