古代的中醫或是古籍裡並沒有「大腦萎縮」的概念或說法，因此並不會使用這種制式化的方式來進行檢測。手指之所以會動，不只是依靠大腦指揮，還需要關節、韌帶，以及周邊神經等都正常、健康，才能做出這些動作。臨床上會有認知功能檢測，像是測試語言、計算、記憶功能等，從結果考慮患者是不是有大腦萎縮、是否要做進一步的檢查。
