山荷葉主要在仲春至初夏間開花，由於花瓣浸水會失去白色素而變透明，所以往往在下過雨之後，被淋濕的花瓣會逐漸變淡，最後變成像水晶一樣透明，它也因此有了「骨架花」與「水晶花」等美譽。

而透明的花瓣一旦乾了之後，又會變回原本的白色。
