這不是因為氣候變化的關係，比較可能是瓜果變質，長出蟲，它們的體形較大，肉眼可見。西瓜中看到的蠕動蛆蟲是瓜實蠅幼蟲，瓜實蠅的成蟲一般產卵在西瓜外皮上，產卵期的功能相當於一把鑽頭，可以鑽進西瓜皮產卵。 產卵處的果皮會出現黃化及流膠現象，孵化之幼蟲取食果肉而致其腐敗甚至落果。
