日本氣象廳（JMA）與內閣府於2025年12月首次發布了所謂的 「北海道・三陸沖後發地震注意情報」（Subsequent Earthquake Advisory）。這種資訊是在已發生大的地震後，提醒大型餘震或後續大地震的發生機率相對提升。這不是預測未來一定會爆發大地震，而是提醒 “相對可能性上升”，但實際發生的機率仍然很低（約 1% 的機率在一週內出現 M8 級以上的大地震）。
