國健署表示，國際癌症研究中心（IARC）已證實「檳榔子本身即為第一類致癌物」，縱使不吞檳榔汁，檳榔子本身含有檳榔素(arecoline)和檳榔鹼(arecaidine)，會透過汁液接觸口腔黏膜而產生致癌物質，都可能導致口腔、咽及食道等部位罹癌。
