1963年楊潔篪考入上海外國語學院附屬中學（今名上海外國語大學附屬外國語學校），是受文化大革命的影響於1968年輟學，進入上海浦江電錶廠當工人。因此並不是工人讀英文的故事，而是本來就有英文專長的人的生平。
