夏季颱風才是比較有可能傳染的期間，鉤端螺旋體病屬熱帶及亞熱帶地區常見人畜共通感染症，在台屬於第4類法定傳染病。主要經老鼠、犬隻、牛、馬、豬等宿主糞便或遭排泄物污染的水源等傳播，共有約300種血清型。像是颱風或大雨造成的淹水，也會讓人因更容易接觸到受污染土壤或水源，而增加感染機會，但不會直接人傳人。
