Newshub》深入追查發現，這個消息源自於非洲的小道消息網站《Ihlaya News》，之後由英國《太陽報》大肆報導後，多家媒體跟進報導，包括英國《BBC》索馬利亞頻道和《紐西蘭先驅報》等重量級媒體，都跟進報導。
進一步追查發現，這個放屁殺蟲男子「瓦米拉馬」的照片，實際上源自於英國《天空新聞》在7月報導伊波拉病毒時，使用《路透》拍攝的照片，照片的真正背景，是一名剛果男子正在接受伊波拉病毒的檢查
