美國疾病控制與預防中心（Centers for Disease Control and Prevention）指出，這些「殭屍鹿」罹患慢性消耗性疾病（chronic wasting disease，CWD），這種病毒會侵蝕鹿的腦、脊髓以及肌肉，導致鹿的體重驟減、反應遲鈍，甚至會死亡，不排除可能透過接觸、食用傳染至人類體內。
