雖然杵狀指屬於肺癌的高風險族群，但並非有此病狀就等於罹患肺癌。蘇一峰表示，杵狀指通常見於心肺疾病患者身上，其中肺部疾病最常見，有杵狀指不代表一定是肺癌，若是肺阻塞也會出現。由於大部分的杵狀指都暗示著身體出現狀況，應刻不容緩的找出潛藏病因，才是最佳的治療。若是原發性的杵狀指則與其他重大疾病相關性較低，但可能出現骨髓纖維化 (myelofibrosis)影響造血功能，以及壓迫性神經病變，仍須規律追蹤。
