莊人祥指出，此病毒曾於1999年在馬來西亞及新加坡造成疫情，且2001年起在孟加拉陸續有疫情通報，但該病毒與1999年造成馬來西亞疫情的病毒為不同株，此外，印度也陸續出現疫情。不過台灣目前無該疾病之通報個案。
