沈一鳴總長他父親早逝，與弟妹三人由母親辛苦養大，雖為外省人但沒住眷村，成長於保安宮附近，其父母皆為暗啞人士，母親仍在。他妹妹說他考上建中，但因家貧故進入空軍预校至官校畢業，他品學兼優，人格高尚，又受美國賞識，前往美参謀學院受訓，為台美两方所重視的將領。台海危機時，他陪國防部長與太平洋司令會談，美方問其立場，他回美方:台灣會戰到一兵一卒。這跟現在一些退將到中國屈膝求利，真是高下立判。今日意外，真令人惋惜。
